Most tutoring programs offer maybe 1-2 hours per week. With TEFA's disability funding tier, Texas families with autistic children can access intensive, consistent support that actually moves the needle.
How Autism Affects Learning
Every autistic student is different, but many share common learning patterns that traditional classrooms and generic tutoring fail to address:
- → Sensory sensitivities — Fluorescent lights, background noise, or visual clutter can make focusing impossible.
- → Need for predictability — Unexpected changes to routine or approach can derail a session.
- → Processing differences — May need extra time, visual supports, or information broken into smaller steps.
- → Intense interests — Leveraging special interests can unlock engagement and motivation.

Frequently Asked Questions
Are your tutors trained to work with autistic students? ▼
Yes. Our tutors have specific training in autism spectrum supports, including sensory considerations, visual learning strategies, and structured teaching approaches. Many have backgrounds in special education or have worked extensively with autistic students.
My child has trouble with online sessions. Will this work? ▼
Many autistic students actually thrive in online settings because they can control their sensory environment. We also offer flexibility — shorter sessions, camera-optional options, and breaks as needed. We'll work with you to find the right format.
Can tutoring support my child's ARD/IEP goals? ▼
Absolutely. Share your child's IEP with us and we'll align tutoring sessions to support those specific goals. We can also provide progress notes that may be helpful for your ARD meetings.
How do I know if my child qualifies for the $30,000 TEFA amount? ▼
If your child has an autism diagnosis documented through an IEP, SSI determination, or physician letter, they likely qualify for the disability funding tier. The TEFA application process will verify eligibility.
When can we start tutoring? ▼
TEFA funds become available starting July 1, 2026. We recommend scheduling your consultation now so we can match you with the right tutor and be ready to start as soon as your funds are active.
